Collection: Hard Drives

Copying a full day of video or a whole photo library should take minutes, not an evening. The Kingston XS2000 reads and writes at up to 2,000MB per second over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, yet weighs only 28.9g and measures 69.54 x 32.58 x 13.5mm. Its removable rubber sleeve adds IP55 protection against water jets and dust and cushions drops of up to about 1.8m, and it comes in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. Actual speed always depends on the port of the device you plug it into.

At up to 1,050MB per second, two drives are built for the road. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is rated IP65 for water and dust, survives drops of up to 3 metres, locks your files with 256-bit AES hardware encryption and clips to a bag with its carabiner loop, in 1TB, 2TB or 4TB. The KIOXIA EXCERIA Plus G2 weighs 42g in an aluminium housing that kept working after 26 drops from 122cm, and it works as external storage for PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Both include a USB-C to USB-A option, so an older computer with USB-A ports works too.

For everyday backups of documents and phone photos, the SanDisk Portable Drive reads at up to 600MB per second, weighs 31.7g, handles drops of up to 2 metres and connects to iPhone and Android phones through the SANDISK App. The HIKSEMI T300S SHIELD reads at up to 560MB per second in a 48g aluminium body with 512GB, 1TB or 2TB, and the HIKSEMI ESSD T100 weighs 40g with a hole for a lanyard or key ring and connects to Android phones with OTG support.

Every drive on this page is a portable SSD: it stores files on flash memory with no moving parts, so it stays silent, light and safer in a bag than a spinning hard disk, and even the 560 to 600MB per second models are about four times faster than a traditional portable hard drive. Mice, keyboards and other computer accessories have their own page.

How much is a portable SSD?

The price depends on the capacity and the speed, from the HIKSEMI ESSD T100 in 512GB to the Kingston XS2000 in 2TB and the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD in 4TB. The current price of each drive and capacity is shown on its product page.

What is the difference between an SSD and an HDD hard disk?

An HDD stores data on spinning disks read by a moving head, while an SSD uses flash memory with no moving parts. That makes a portable SSD faster, lighter, silent and less sensitive to knocks: the SanDisk Portable Drive reads up to four times faster than a traditional portable hard drive.

Which portable SSD is the fastest?

The Kingston XS2000 is the fastest here, at up to 2,000MB per second over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. A slower port on your computer limits the speed you get.

Which capacity do I need?

512GB suits documents and phone backups, 1TB holds a large photo library, and 2TB or more suits video projects and games. The Kingston XS2000 comes in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB, the KIOXIA EXCERIA Plus G2 in 1TB and 2TB, and the HIKSEMI T300S SHIELD in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.
