The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) cuff around your ear instead of sealing it, with up to 9 hours of battery, Immersive Audio and a wireless charging case.

Most earbuds ask you to choose between your music and everything around you. These do not. The cuffed open-ear design rests on the edge of your ear and leaves the ear canal completely open, so you hear traffic, a colleague, or your own front door while the music plays. It is the pair for people who never wear earbuds at work or on the street because blocking the world out is not an option.

OpenAudio Tech is what keeps that private. Sound is aimed into your ear rather than sprayed around you, so the person next to you hears very little of what you are listening to. Against the first generation the sound itself moves up: deeper bass and louder volume, TrueSpatial Tech for Immersive Audio that places sound around you rather than inside your head, and a new Cinema Mode tuned for films rather than music.

Battery is the other upgrade. Up to 9 hours on a charge with standard listening, and the case carries up to another 19.5 hours — about 28.5 hours in total before either needs a socket. A 10-minute stop in the closed case returns up to 2 hours, and the case itself now charges wirelessly, which the first generation could not do without a separate accessory.

The rest is built for wearing all day. An adjustable flex joint lets the cuff sit the way your ear wants it, each earbud weighs about 5.9 g, and IPX4 covers sweat and a sudden shower. How is an open-ear earbud different from a normal one?
A normal earbud goes into the ear canal and seals it. This one cuffs the edge of your ear and leaves the canal completely open, so nothing is pushed inside and nothing is blocked out. You hear the road, the office and the doorbell exactly as you would without it, with your music playing on top. If you have never been able to wear sealed earbuds comfortably for long, this is the design that solves it.

Can the people around me hear what I am playing?
Far less than you would expect from an open design. OpenAudio Tech aims the sound into your ear rather than out into the room. At normal listening levels someone sitting next to you picks up very little. At high volume in a silent room they will hear something, the same as with any open-ear product.

Does it cancel noise?
No, and that is the point. There is no active noise cancellation because the ear canal is deliberately left open. If you want silence on a plane or in an open office, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds are the sealed pair with ANC. This one is for staying aware of what is around you.

What is new compared with the first generation Ultra Open Earbuds?

Will they stay on my ear?
The cuff wraps the outer edge of the ear and the adjustable flex joint lets you set how tightly it sits, so it holds without pressing into the canal. Because nothing is wedged inside the ear, there is no fit test and no ear tips to swap.

What is the difference between the limited-edition colours and the standard ones?
