A smart fan is an easy first step into a smart home: you switch it on from your phone before you walk into the room. The Xiaomi Smart Tower Fan 2 has a 0.6 m tall air outlet on a base about the size of an A4 sheet, sweeps up to 150 degrees and starts at 28.7dB(A) on its lowest level, quiet enough for a bedroom at night. In the Xiaomi Home app over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi you get 100 speed levels, the sweep angle, a natural breeze mode and a turn-off schedule. On a desk or a bedside table, the Xiaomi Smart Desktop Air Circulation Fan moves 1,180 cubic metres of air an hour, oscillates 120 degrees from side to side and 100 degrees up and down, and runs from its Type-C adapter or from a power bank of at least 18W.

Both fans cost little to run through a long summer. At level 1 the tower fan draws as little as 1.5W, about 1 kWh for 90 days at 8 hours a day, and the desk fan draws 1.75W. The tower fan's 6.9 mm grille, 12V adapter and child lock suit homes with small children, and the desk fan has a child lock too. Which app controls the Xiaomi smart fans?

The Xiaomi Home app, over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. It turns the Xiaomi Smart Tower Fan 2 and the Xiaomi Smart Desktop Air Circulation Fan on and off from anywhere, switches modes, sets the oscillation angle and gives 100 speed levels in direct mode.

Do the Xiaomi smart fans work without Wi-Fi?

Yes. Wi-Fi is needed only for the app. The Xiaomi Smart Tower Fan 2 has top buttons for power, mode, speed, oscillation and a 1 to 4 hour timer, and the Xiaomi Smart Desktop Air Circulation Fan has six buttons on its base.

Tower fan or desk fan: which one do I need?

Choose the Xiaomi Smart Tower Fan 2 for a bedroom or living room floor: it sweeps up to 150 degrees and reaches 10 m. Choose the Xiaomi Smart Desktop Air Circulation Fan for a desk or shelf: its 3D oscillation circulates the air of a 20 square metre room in about 3 minutes, and it can run from a power bank.

Can the Xiaomi desk fan run on a power bank?

Yes. The Xiaomi Smart Desktop Air Circulation Fan runs from a QC or PD power bank with at least 18W and a 9V or 12V output, and Xiaomi measured up to 26 hours at level 1 without oscillation on a 10000mAh power bank. The fan has no built-in battery.

How much electricity does a smart fan use?

Very little. The Xiaomi Smart Tower Fan 2 is rated at 24W and draws as little as 1.5W at level 1, about 1 kWh for a 90-day summer at 8 hours a day. The Xiaomi Smart Desktop Air Circulation Fan is rated at 18W and uses about 1.3 kWh over the same summer.

Does the eufy video doorbell need a monthly subscription?

No. The eufy Video Doorbell C210 sends its clips to the Wi-Fi Doorbell Chime, which stores them on a microSD card of 16GB to 128GB, so there is no monthly fee.
